How this list is built,
and what it is not.
The directory page is a snapshot of HMRC’s find-software service: 152 products, scraped 2 October 2026 and re-checked weekly. This page is how that snapshot is made.
Where the list comes from
The source is HMRC’s own finder, Find software that works with Making Tax Digital for Income Tax. Each product page is read once. Products are kept once, keyed by HMRC’s productId, so the same listing cannot appear twice.
For every product the snapshot keeps the name, the software type, the desktop operating systems, the mobile apps the vendor declares, the language, the link to the vendor’s site, and every grade HMRC shows. Nothing else about the product is invented at collection time.
How a grade is read
HMRC uses three states: Ready now, In development, and Not included. Ready now is the only state that counts toward a total on this site. Not included is a no.
In development is a vendor commitment for the 16 tax-return items, not a feature you can use today, and HMRC applies that state only to those 16 items. The other columns, including income sources, records, bridging, and the accessibility grades, are a straight yes or no. A blank there does not mean the vendor plans to add it.
The weekly check and the published page
A check runs every Monday at 05:00 UTC. It walks the live HMRC finder and stores the result. That check does not edit the website. The pages you are reading render a snapshot that was copied into the site and deployed after a review. The two clocks are separate on purpose: a crawl can fail part-way, and a half-finished crawl must not look like products disappearing.
The date on the directory is the date of the published snapshot. If that date is more than 14 days ago, the page says the dataset was last successfully published on that date. It does not claim the weekly check has already been published.
Prices are a different file
HMRC does not publish a price. Where a price appears on TapTax, it comes from a separate note last checked in August 2026. That note is not part of the HMRC snapshot, and it is not in the public download. A product with no researched price is left out of the price file rather than given a guessed figure.
What this list is not
The grades are what each vendor told HMRC. They are not a test TapTax ran against the software. Being listed means a product can be used with Making Tax Digital. It does not mean the product can complete a tax return: that is the separate count of return items, and most listed products still have none of them ready.
HMRC lists what each vendor declares. Feature flags, mobile-app support in particular, are vendor claims rather than verified facts, and listings change. Check with the vendor before you buy. Data: HMRC find-MTD-software service (tax.service.gov.uk), scraped 2 October 2026.
