How to connect

In Claude on the web, desktop or phone, open Customize, then Connectors, choose Discover and search for TapTax. If TapTax is not listed yet, choose Add custom connector and enter https://api.taptax.co.uk/mcp.
Select Connect, sign in to TapTax, check what Claude is asking for, and select Allow. You come straight back to Claude.
Ask away. The estimate, tax code and MTD tools also work before you connect; Claude asks you to sign in the first time it needs your records.

In Claude Code, run claude mcp add --transport http taptax https://api.taptax.co.uk/mcp and sign in with /mcp.

What you can ask

“How much tax do I owe so far this year?”: Claude reads your tax position: income, expenses and profit counted the way your dashboard counts them, the estimated income tax and Class 4 National Insurance, and your next deadline.
“Log this receipt (with a photo)”: Claude reads the supplier, date and amount from the photo, picks the HMRC expense category, checks anything unclear with you, and records it.
“Invoice Dave £450 for Tuesday’s boiler service and send it”: Claude creates the invoice in your numbering with your business details, shows you the total, and emails it with the PDF once you say yes.
“Sort out the transactions that need reviewing”: Claude lists what is waiting for a business or personal decision and updates each one as you answer.
“Get my Q2 update ready”: Claude shows a card with the cumulative figures for the quarter and a button that opens TapTax on the submit page, where you check and file.
“Is my tax code 1257L right on £38,000?”: Works without an account: the same checker as the website explains the code and any over- or underpayment.

Why filing stays in TapTax

Every quarterly update sent to HMRC carries fraud-prevention details about the device, browser and connection it was filed from. When you file in TapTax, those describe your phone or computer. A request relayed through an AI assistant’s servers could only describe the assistant’s servers, which HMRC would rightly reject.

So Claude does everything up to the last step: it gathers the figures, flags what still needs reviewing, and hands you a button that opens TapTax on the right period. You check the numbers and tap file. Nothing is ever sent to HMRC from a chat.

Privacy and security

You sign in on taptax.co.uk, never in Claude. Claude receives a token that works only for TapTax’s connector, for the access you allowed, and TapTax stores only a fingerprint of it.
Access tokens last an hour and renew on their own; disconnecting ends them at once.
TapTax keeps a record of which tool ran, when and whether it worked, so you and we can see what a connection did. It does not record what was asked or answered.
Every tool is limited to your own records, and follows the same rules and plan limits as the TapTax app.

Frequently asked questions

Can Claude file my return to HMRC?

No. Claude prepares your quarterly update and shows you the figures, and a button opens TapTax on the submit page for that period. You check the figures and file there. HMRC requires fraud-prevention details about the device and connection you file from, and a request relayed through an AI assistant cannot describe either honestly, so filing always happens in TapTax itself.

What can Claude see once I connect?

Only what a tool returns when Claude uses it: for example your income and expense totals, a list of transactions you searched for, or your invoices. It never sees your password, your bank logins, your HMRC sign-in or your National Insurance number. You choose read-only or read and change access when you connect.

Will Claude change things without asking?

Claude asks before it uses a tool that changes your records, and you can set each tool to always allow, needs approval or blocked in Claude’s connector settings. Sending an invoice is marked as an action with outside effects, so Claude shows you the invoice and waits for a clear yes.

Does it cost anything?

Connecting is free on every TapTax plan, and the tax estimate, tax code and MTD tools work without an account. The tools follow your plan: mileage tracking is part of Pro, and the free plan includes three invoices. Claude itself needs a Claude plan that supports connectors.

How do I disconnect?

In TapTax, open Settings and choose Disconnect next to Claude under Connected apps. That ends the connection straight away. You can also remove TapTax from Claude’s connector settings.

Is my data used to train AI models?

TapTax does not use your records to train models, and it does not send them anywhere unless a connected assistant asks for them through a tool you allowed. What Claude does with a conversation is covered by Anthropic’s own terms and your Claude privacy settings.

Which apps can connect?

TapTax speaks the open Model Context Protocol, so Claude on the web, desktop and mobile, Claude Code, and other assistants that support remote MCP connectors with OAuth sign-in can all connect. The consent page always shows which website is asking before you allow anything.
