The problem
Self Assessment shouldn't mean a shoebox and a January panic
From April 2026, Making Tax Digital makes it bigger: if you earn over £50,000 self-employed, you will file four quarterly updates to HMRC, not one return a year. TapTax turns all of it into a few taps for UK sole traders. Connect your bank, let AI sort your transactions, snap receipts as you go, and file when HMRC asks. No spreadsheets, no jargon, and no accountant bill unless you want one.
Bloated software
You need 5 features, not 200. Why pay for, and wade through, tools built for accountants?
Overpriced for what you need
Competitors charge £12 to £35 a month for features you will never use. TapTax starts at £4.99.
The deadline is real
From April 2026, HMRC requires quarterly digital submissions. No more shoeboxes of receipts. No more paper.
Not built for mobile
You're on-site, not at a desk. Yet most tax software still feels like a desktop spreadsheet.
No idea what you owe
Most sole traders don't know their tax position until January. By then it's too late to plan, save, or avoid a nasty surprise bill.
Lost receipts, lost money
Every crumpled receipt and missed expense is tax relief you will never reclaim. The average sole trader misses over £400 in allowable deductions every year.
The basics
What is Making Tax Digital for Income Tax?
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is HMRC's new way of filing. From April 2026, self-employed people earning over £50,000 send four quarterly updates to HMRC instead of one annual return. TapTax keeps the digital records HMRC requires and files each update for you.

The timeline
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax: what changes and when
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is being phased in by income level, starting in April 2026, and it replaces one annual return with four quarterly updates plus a year-end final declaration.
April 2026
Mandatory for self-employed people and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000. You keep digital records and send four quarterly updates to HMRC.
April 2027
Extends to those with qualifying income over £30,000.
April 2028
Planned to extend to those with qualifying income over £20,000.
Every year
A final declaration replaces the old Self Assessment return and confirms your figures after the four updates.
TapTax keeps the digital records HMRC requires and files every quarterly update and your final declaration for you.

Reviewed vs a one-off review
At £149/year, Reviewed costs about the same as a single one-off review elsewhere, but you get an accountant partner check every quarter, every year, plus a year-end review before you file. Same price, far more cover.
Reviewed vs a monthly bookkeeper
Bookkeeping bundles run £29 to £49 a month. Reviewed is review-only: you keep your own books on AI-categorised, bank-fed data, and an accountant partner just checks and signs off, so it lands at roughly a third of the price.
Reviewed includes a check on your figures by an independent accountant partner. The partner reviews and signs off; you keep your own HMRC connection and file the MTD-compatible submission yourself. The year-end review is included on the annual plan or after 3 paid months.
