Cheapest and Simplest MTD Software in 2026: No-Nonsense Options
The cheapest and simplest MTD software for 2026, ranked on prices checked in August 2026. Free options, the £20-a-year outlier, and what the big brands really cost.
- Genuinely free MTD filing is now a real category, not a trick. Several products on HMRC's directory file quarterly updates and the final declaration for £0, and most of them are web-only.
- The cheapest credible paid option is not a big brand. MTD 4 Income Tax is £20 a year and HMRC grades it ready on all 16 tax-return items.
- The big brands have cheap entry tiers now: Xero Simple at £7 plus VAT and QuickBooks Sole Trader at £10 plus VAT, checked August 2026. Xero retired Starter, Standard and Premium for new customers in September 2024, so older rankings quoting £15 or £30 are ranking a dead line.
- The expensive end is what you get pushed to, not what you sign up for: Xero Grow is £37 plus VAT, roughly £533 a year including VAT.
- Cheapest and simplest are different rankings. The cheap end is overwhelmingly manual or web-only; TapTax Starter at £49 a year is the cheapest option that combines a free entry point, a native mobile app, bank feeds and AI categorisation.
You need Making Tax Digital software. You do not need to spend hundreds of pounds a year on it.
If you are a sole trader, you probably did not become self-employed because you love bookkeeping. You want the cheapest tool that does the job and the simplest one that does not waste your time. Ideally both.
This guide ranks the main options by price and by simplicity, then cross-references to find the tools that are genuinely both. Every price was checked in August 2026 and is a standard rate rather than an introductory offer, unless it says otherwise.
- Bridging Software
- A tool that connects a spreadsheet (like Excel or Google Sheets) to HMRC's MTD system. It pulls your income and expense data from the spreadsheet and submits it to HMRC via API. Bridging software is often very cheap but requires you to maintain accurate spreadsheet records manually.
Why Price and Simplicity Matter for Sole Traders
Sole traders are not businesses with accounting departments. You are an individual trying to earn a living, and HMRC has added a new compliance requirement to your plate.
The average sole trader in the UK earns between £25,000 and £45,000. Spending £500 a year on accounting software is a real cost at that level. That is money not going into your pocket, your tools or your van.
Simplicity matters because time is money. If your MTD software takes 30 minutes to figure out every time you open it, you will procrastinate on filing. Procrastination leads to rushed last-minute submissions, errors and eventually HMRC penalty points.
The ideal MTD tool is cheap enough that you do not resent paying for it and simple enough that you actually use it.
MTD Software Ranked by Price (Cheapest First)
1. The genuinely free listed products
Price: £0
34of 133 (26%)list a free versionHMRC MTD for Income Tax directory, scraped 23 August 2026This is the biggest change in the market since the last time most rankings were written. Free is no longer a stripped-back consolation tier. Several products on HMRC's directory file the complete legal obligation, quarterly updates and the final declaration, for nothing at all: Clear Books Free, My Tax Digital, TaxHeaven Angel and Self Assessment Direct among them, with GetGround free for landlords.
What you get: digital record-keeping and full MTD submission.
What you miss: almost all of them are web-only, so there is no phone app to review expenses on between jobs. Bank feeds, AI categorisation and receipt scanning are thin or absent, and a few "free" listings turn out to be bank-account deals or metered per submission. We sorted the genuinely free from the rest in our analysis of all 133 listed MTD tools.
Best for: anyone comfortable at a desk and a keyboard who wants to pay nothing.
2. TapTax Free Tier
Price: £0
TapTax's free tier covers basic MTD quarterly filing from a phone, which is the gap the free web tools leave open.
What you get: digital record-keeping, quarterly submission and a mobile-first interface.
What you miss: bank feeds, AI categorisation, receipt scanning and priority support, all of which sit on the paid plans.
One thing to know before you choose it: TapTax is MTD-compatible and going through HMRC's recognition process, so it did not appear on the find-MTD-software directory at our 23 August 2026 scrape. If you need to file a live submission this month, pick a listed product.
Best for: sole traders who want a free, phone-first option and the ability to upgrade when ready.
3. MTD 4 Income Tax
Price: £20/year
The genuine surprise in this ranking, and the reason it is worth re-checking prices rather than trusting an old article. MTD 4 Income Tax charges £20 a year for individuals, and HMRC grades it ready on all 16 of the tax-return items, which only two other listed products manage.
What you get: MTD quarterly filing plus the most complete year-end coverage on the directory, for less than the price of a takeaway.
What you miss: bank feeds, AI categorisation and a native mobile app. It is a responsive website with a privacy-first positioning, not an automation product.
Best for: anyone whose return has pensions, dividends, CIS or capital gains in it and who wants the lowest possible price.
4. TapTax Starter
Price: £4.99/mo, or £49/year
This is where you start getting meaningful automation. TapTax Starter includes the features that save real time.
What you get: everything in the free tier plus automatic bank feeds, AI expense categorisation, receipt scanning, filing reminders and tax estimates.
What you miss: nothing essential for MTD compliance. Pro at £9.99 a month, or £99 a year, adds priority support and advanced features.
Best for: sole traders who want the work done for them rather than the price alone.
5. Xero Simple
Price: £7 + VAT/mo, roughly £101/year including VAT
Xero retired Starter, Standard and Premium for new customers in September 2024. On the current line, Simple is the entry plan, and at £7 plus VAT it is the cheapest a major accounting brand has been for a UK sole trader.
What you get: a deliberately stripped-back plan aimed at basic MTD for Income Tax from a large, established vendor.
What you miss: detail on exactly what Simple includes is thin in every source we could find, and Xero's own plan pages were not reachable when we tried to read them in August 2026. Confirm the feature list with Xero before choosing it. There is no free tier at any Xero plan level, which HMRC's directory confirms.
Best for: someone who wants a big brand, has a simple return and will not outgrow the entry tier.
6. QuickBooks Sole Trader
Price: £10 + VAT/mo, £144/year including VAT
Intuit has consolidated its self-employed line and the UK product for MTD for Income Tax is QuickBooks Sole Trader. Reviews of "QuickBooks Self-Employed" are describing the predecessor.
What you get: bank feeds, expense tracking, mileage tracking, receipt capture, tax estimates and MTD filing, plus the strongest year-end coverage of any big brand here at 15 of the 16 return items graded ready.
What you miss at this tier: VAT returns and fuller reporting sit on higher plans. We have not verified what those higher plans currently cost, so this page does not quote a figure for them. Check directly rather than trusting an older number.
Important: QuickBooks runs a promotional rate of £1 plus VAT a month for the first six months. Budget for the £10 standard rate, not the promotion.
Best for: sole traders whose return has more than business income in it, and who want mileage tracking built in.
7. GoSimpleTax
Price: roughly £226/year for MTD
This one moved the most since our last ranking, and not in GoSimpleTax's favour. The subscription that older articles quote is the Self Assessment product, not the MTD one. As checked in August 2026, the Individual subscription is £69.99 per tax year and MTD for Income Tax is sold separately at £12.99 a month, £155.88 a year. Together that is roughly £226 a year.
What you get: genuine SA100 supplementary-page depth and in-app guidance that explains each field.
What you miss: bank feeds, receipt scanning, AI categorisation and a mobile app. All data entry is manual through a web interface. There is no free tier. GoSimpleTax also did not appear on HMRC's find-MTD-software directory at our 23 August 2026 scrape, which is a dated fact about that list rather than a comment on the product, and listings change.
Best for: people who need supplementary-page depth and are happy to pay for it. Not, despite the reputation, a budget option.
8. FreeAgent
Price: £0 with a qualifying bank account, otherwise £19/mo list, £228/year
FreeAgent is a UK-built accounting tool owned by NatWest, and the bank relationship is the whole pricing story. With a qualifying NatWest, RBS, Ulster Bank or Mettle account in regular use, it is free. Without one, the sole trader plan lists at £19 a month, with a £9.50 promotional rate running.
What you get: full accounting including invoicing, time tracking, bank feeds, expense tracking and MTD quarterly filing plus the final declaration. HMRC grades it ready on 15 of the 16 return items.
What you miss: AI categorisation, which is rule-based here, and a truly mobile-first design.
The catch worth planning for: if you switch banks, a free tool becomes a £228-a-year tool overnight.
Best for: anyone who already banks with NatWest, RBS, Ulster or Mettle. At £0 for a near-complete product, it is the strongest deal in this entire ranking, and it is worth checking your bank before you read any further.
9. Xero Ignite
Price: £16 + VAT/mo, roughly £230/year including VAT
Ignite is the first Xero plan that behaves like the Xero people picture when they say "Xero". It is also the one with the constraint that decides your real cost.
Ignite is reported as capped at 20 invoices and 10 bills a month, with unlimited invoicing on the plans above it. That figure comes from independent UK pricing trackers that agree with each other rather than from Xero, whose own plan pages returned errors when we tried to verify them in August 2026. Treat it as corroborated rather than confirmed and check it with Xero.
Best for: a Xero user who invoices lightly and wants the full product.
10. Xero Grow
Price: £37 + VAT/mo, roughly £533/year including VAT
The most expensive option on this page, and the one nobody sets out to buy. Grow is where an actively invoicing sole trader lands after outgrowing Ignite's cap, which is why "Xero costs £7" and "Xero costs £533 a year" can both be true depending on how many invoices you send.
What you get: comprehensive accounting with unlimited invoicing, bank reconciliation, reporting, a payroll add-on and accountant collaboration.
What you miss: AI categorisation, mobile-first design and simplicity. And note that on HMRC's directory, all that platform buys you 2 of the 16 tax-return items ready, with 14 in development. Price is not the only place Xero costs you at year end.
Best for: sole traders who genuinely need invoicing at volume, or whose accountant already works in Xero.
The price table
All figures are annual cost for one person, checked August 2026, including VAT where a VAT basis is published.
| Tool | Annual cost | Free tier | Bank feeds | AI categorisation | Native mobile app |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free listed tools | £0 | Yes | Varies | No | Mostly no |
| TapTax Free | £0 | Yes | No | No | Yes |
| FreeAgent | £0 or £228 | With a qualifying bank | Yes | No | Yes |
| MTD 4 Income Tax | £20 | No, first month free | No | No | No |
| TapTax Starter | £49 | Free tier below it | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| TapTax Pro | £99 | Free tier below it | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Xero Simple | ~£101 | No | Yes | No | Yes |
| QuickBooks | £144 | No | Yes | Basic | Yes |
| GoSimpleTax | ~£226 | No | No | No | No |
| Xero Ignite | ~£230 | No | Yes | No | Yes |
| Xero Grow | ~£533 | No | Yes | No | Yes |
Two notes on reading it. Xero has confirmed a further UK price rise from 1 September 2026, so its figures are a short-dated snapshot. And FreeAgent occupies two rows' worth of price at once depending on where you bank, which is unusual enough to be worth checking before anything else on this page.
Simplicity is the key to compliance. If your software takes longer to use than the task it replaces, you will stop using it. Pick the tool you will actually open every week.

MTD Software Ranked by Simplicity (Easiest First)
Price is one thing. Ease of use is another, and the two rankings barely resemble each other.
1. TapTax (simplest)
Setup time: under 5 minutes Learning curve: minimal Daily effort: 2-5 minutes per week reviewing AI suggestions
Mobile-first, with a swipe-based interface for categorising expenses. No chart of accounts to set up, no accounting jargon, no multi-screen navigation to file. Connect your bank, review AI suggestions with swipes, tap to file quarterly.
2. QuickBooks Sole Trader (medium-low)
Setup time: 15-30 minutes Learning curve: medium Daily effort: 5-10 minutes per week with bank feeds
A reasonable mobile app and a tier that is less overwhelming than the full business product. The interface can still be confusing, menus are not always intuitive, and some workflows feel designed for the US market rather than UK sole traders.
3. The free web tools (simple, but web-only and manual)
Setup time: 10-20 minutes Learning curve: low to medium Daily effort: 15-30 minutes per week entering data by hand
Most of the £0 products are clear enough to understand, but without bank feeds or a phone app, every transaction is typed in at a desk. Simple to learn, time-consuming to run.
4. GoSimpleTax (simple but entirely manual)
Setup time: 10-15 minutes Learning curve: low Daily effort: 15-30 minutes per week entering data manually
Clear forms and good in-app guidance. But without bank feeds or AI, every transaction is entered by hand, and at roughly £226 a year you are paying a premium for that manual work.
5. FreeAgent (medium)
Setup time: 20-30 minutes Learning curve: medium Daily effort: 5-10 minutes per week with bank feeds
Cleaner than Xero for non-accountants, but still a full accounting tool. You need to understand bank reconciliation and account categories, and the web-first design limits the mobile experience.
6. Xero (most complex)
Setup time: 30-60 minutes, often with accountant help Learning curve: high Daily effort: variable, depending on how many features you use
Powerful but overwhelming for a sole trader. Setting up a chart of accounts, configuring bank rules and understanding reconciliation takes real time. Many sole traders on Xero are there because their accountant set it up for them, which is a perfectly good reason and not an accident.
The Best of Both: Cheap AND Simple
Here is the cross-reference. Price rank is the annual cost above; simplicity rank is the section you have just read.
| Tool | Price rank | Simplicity rank | Overall |
|---|---|---|---|
| FreeAgent, with the bank deal | 1st (£0) | 5th | Unbeatable if you qualify, ordinary if not |
| TapTax Free | 1st (£0) | 1st | Best free option with a phone app |
| Free listed web tools | 1st (£0) | 3rd | Cheapest possible, at a desk |
| MTD 4 Income Tax | 4th (£20) | 3rd | Cheapest complete return, no automation |
| TapTax Starter | 5th (£49) | 1st | Best balance of price, simplicity and automation |
| Xero Simple | 7th (~£101) | 6th | Cheap now, but thin and hard to verify |
| QuickBooks | 8th (£144) | 2nd | Dearest of the simple ones, best at year end |
| GoSimpleTax | 9th (~£226) | 4th | Neither cheap nor automated |
| Xero Grow | 11th (~£533) | 6th | Neither cheap nor simple |
Three things fall out of that table, and only one of them is about us.
Check your bank first. If you hold a NatWest, RBS, Ulster or Mettle account, FreeAgent is £0 for a product HMRC grades ready on all 16 return items as of 23 August 2026. Nothing on this page beats free-and-near-complete, and it would be dishonest to bury that under a recommendation.
"Cheapest" and "cheapest with automation" are different questions. The £0 and £20 options are genuinely cheaper than TapTax Starter. They are also manual, and mostly web-only. If you are happy to type in every transaction at a desk, take the cheaper option and enjoy it.
The old headline no longer holds. For years the ranking wrote itself, because the big platforms were four to six times the price of a purpose-built tool. On the current lines Xero Simple is roughly £101 a year and QuickBooks £144, close enough that price alone will not decide it. The gap only reopens when you outgrow the entry tier, and with Xero that step, from roughly £230 to roughly £533, is a big one.
What the Cheap End Actually Costs You
Free is appealing. It is worth being honest about what free means in practice.
When free or near-free is genuinely enough
You have fewer than 20 business transactions per month. Your expenses are simple and predictable. You are happy to enter data manually at a desk. You can track quarterly deadlines without reminders. You do not need receipt scanning because your expenses are primarily bank-based.
If that sounds like you, perhaps a single regular client paying by bank transfer with a phone bill and some travel to claim, a free tool works fine and you should use one.
When free costs you more than £49 a year in time
You have more than 20 transactions per month. You receive cash payments that need logging alongside bank transactions. You buy materials from various suppliers and need them categorised correctly. You want to photograph receipts rather than file paper ones. You are rarely at a desk.
In that scenario the time you spend on manual entry is worth far more than £49 a year. If manual entry adds two hours a month against automated bank feeds and AI categorisation, and your time is worth anything above about £2 an hour, the paid tool pays for itself several times over.
Most sole traders fall into the second category. Free tools are genuinely free, but they are not free of effort.
Hidden Costs to Watch For
The advertised price is not always the real price.
Promotional rates that step up
QuickBooks Sole Trader is £1 plus VAT a month for six months and £10 plus VAT after that. FreeAgent runs a £9.50 promotional rate against a £19 list. Kletta discounts heavily off its list prices. Budget on the standard rate and set a calendar reminder for the step-up date rather than finding it on a bank statement.
Tier ladders, which is where the real money is
Xero's entry price is £7 plus VAT and its Grow plan is £37 plus VAT. The thing that moves you between them is invoice volume, not a decision you consciously make. Before comparing headline prices, work out which tier your actual usage lands on. The same applies to QuickBooks, where VAT returns and fuller reporting sit above the sole-trader tier at prices we have not verified.
Add-ons
Xero's base price does not include everything. Hubdoc for receipt scanning is included but is a separate app, payroll is an add-on and some integrations carry third-party subscriptions.
Bank-tied free tiers
FreeAgent is free with a qualifying NatWest, RBS, Ulster or Mettle account and £19 a month without one. Several bank-bundled MTD tools work the same way. If you might switch banks, price the tool at its list rate, not its bundled one.
Annual price rises
Most vendors raise prices annually. Xero raised Grow, Comprehensive and Ultimate on 1 September 2025 and has confirmed a further UK rise from 1 September 2026. A tool that looks cheap today may not be in two years.

Our Recommendation
There are three honest answers here, and which one is yours takes about thirty seconds to work out.
If you bank with NatWest, RBS, Ulster or Mettle, look at FreeAgent first. It is £0 for you and HMRC grades it ready on 15 of the 16 return items. Nothing else on this page competes with that.
If you want the absolute lowest cost and you do not mind manual entry at a desk, take one of the free listed products, or MTD 4 Income Tax at £20 a year if your return needs the full 16 items covered. These are cheaper than anything we sell and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise.
If you want the work done for you, from a phone, then TapTax Starter at £49 a year is the pick, and here is the specific claim rather than a vague one. It is the cheapest option that combines a free entry point, a native app on both iOS and Android, bank feeds, AI categorisation and coverage of sole trader, UK property and foreign property income. That combination is genuinely rare on HMRC's directory:
5of 133 (4%)are free, on both app stores, keep digital records and cover all three income sourcesHMRC MTD for Income Tax directory, scraped 23 August 2026The caveat we put on every page: TapTax is MTD-compatible and going through HMRC's recognition process, so it has no row on that directory yet. If you must file a live submission this month, choose a listed product.
If you need invoicing, time tracking or full accounting, none of the above is the right answer and you should read the TapTax vs Xero vs QuickBooks comparison for those trade-offs instead.
For a broader comparison including detailed feature breakdowns, see the best MTD software for sole traders in 2026 guide, or compare the whole field on HMRC's own grades in the MTD software directory.
