TapTax vs Invoice2go
A US invoicing app priced by volume, or a UK tax app that invoices

Invoice2go, owned by the US payments company BILL, sells invoicing in tiers capped by how many invoices you send. TapTax gives UK sole traders unlimited invoices on its first paid plan and files their quarterly updates.

Invoice2go is a mobile invoicing app owned since September 2021 by BILL, the US payments and payables company. It is a capable mobile invoicing app with estimates, credit memos, expenses and time tracking. Its pricing, though, is built around a number you will hit quickly as a UK sole trader: how many invoices you send.

TapTax counts nothing once you pay. This page sets out what each costs at the volumes sole traders actually send, and what you get beyond the invoice.

Where these prices come from

Invoice2go's pricing page shows dollars by default. The pound prices on this page come from the same page's pricing data requested for the UK, and the card fees from its plan details in pounds, both read on 7 October 2026. Annual plans on the cheaper tiers are capped per year rather than per month: 30 invoices a year on Starter and 100 on Professional.

The volume problem, in pounds

A sole trader with eight regular clients sends at least eight invoices a month. On Invoice2go that is past Starter's two and Professional's five, so the only plan that fits is Premium, at £44.99 a month. That is £539.88 a year on monthly billing, or £449.99 on annual billing.

Recurring invoices sit on the same Premium plan, so anyone who bills the same clients every month is on Premium whatever their volume.

The same sole trader on TapTax Starter pays £4.99 a month or £49 a year, with unlimited invoices, repeating invoices and reminders included.

Recurring invoice
An invoice set to send itself on a schedule, such as the first of each month, so regular work is billed without you creating it each time.

Card payments

Invoice2go takes card payments on every plan, and the fee falls as the plan rises: 2.4% plus 20p on Starter, 2.1% plus 20p on Professional and 1.9% plus 20p on Premium. On a £500 invoice paid by card that is £12.20, £10.70 or £9.70.

TapTax does not take cards on invoices. Your client pays by bank transfer to the account details on the invoice, and nothing is deducted. If your clients are businesses, transfer is usually how they pay anyway.

Invoice2go's own banking and US bank transfers through BILL are US only, per its support pages.

What Invoice2go does better

Invoice2go is a fuller job-and-billing app. Estimates and credit memos are unlimited on every plan and live in your account. Time and expense tracking are included throughout. On Professional and above it syncs with QuickBooks and Xero, which suits someone whose accountant already works in one of those.

What TapTax does better

TapTax is cheaper at any real volume, and it does the tax.

It chases late payers before, on and after the due date, and for business clients it can add statutory interest at 8% above the Bank of England base rate plus £40, £70 or £100 fixed compensation, under the Late Payment of Commercial Debts Act.

It reads your receipts and supplier bills, checks that the net, VAT and total agree and that the VAT rate is a UK one, and matches each to its payment on your bank statement. Then it turns your records into your Making Tax Digital quarterly update, for sole trader income and, on Pro, UK and overseas property.

Invoice2go stops at the invoice. To file under Making Tax Digital you would sync it to QuickBooks or Xero, which needs Professional or above and a second subscription.

What a year costs

For a sole trader sending around ten invoices a month, half of them repeating, and filing under Making Tax Digital:

  • Invoice2go Premium plus QuickBooks Sole Trader Plus for MTD: £449.99 a year on annual billing plus £108 a year excluding VAT for QuickBooks at its list price, checked 7 October 2026.
  • TapTax Starter: £49 a year, with everything above included.

Moving from Invoice2go to TapTax

Switching invoicing apps mid-year is less work than it sounds, because nothing about your past invoices has to move.

  1. Keep your old invoices where they are. They are your record of what you billed, and you must keep business records for at least 5 years after the 31 January deadline for the tax year. Export them as PDFs if you are closing your Invoice2go account.
  2. Add your regular clients once, with their payment terms. TapTax uses the terms to set each due date, and our invoice due date calculator shows how they work.
  3. Build a rate card of the jobs or services you sell at your usual prices, so a new invoice is a few taps.
  4. Note where your numbering changes. TapTax numbers your invoices itself, in one unbroken run (INV-001, INV-002 and so on). Keep a note of your last Invoice2go number with your records, so anyone checking can see where one run ends and the next begins. Our guide to invoice numbering explains why a clear sequence matters.
  5. Import your bank statement for the current tax year as a CSV. Your income is counted from the payments, so invoices you sent from Invoice2go that have already been paid are not counted twice.
  6. Set repeating invoices and reminders for clients you bill every month.

Who should choose which

A US-linked freelancer who needs dollar invoicing and card payments

Invoice2go, on the plan that matches your volume. Its strengths are in card payments and US banking, which TapTax does not attempt.

A roofer sending a dozen invoices a month to homeowners and agents

TapTax. Invoice2go's volume pricing puts you on Premium; TapTax Starter costs a ninth of that, with repeats, reminders and your quarterly update. See the roofer invoice template.

Someone who sends one or two invoices a month

TapTax's free plan or our free invoice generator, at no cost, rather than £7.99 a month.

The bottom line

“Invoice2go prices every invoice you send. TapTax prices none of them, and files your tax as well.”
TapTax, Invoicing comparison

Invoice2go is a mature mobile invoicing app with card payments, estimates and time tracking, but its caps push any regular invoicer onto a £44.99 plan and it does nothing for UK tax. For a UK sole trader under Making Tax Digital, TapTax does unlimited invoicing, repeats, reminders, receipts and quarterly filing for £4.99 a month.
