TapTax vs Billdu
An invoice and estimate app, or invoicing inside your tax app
Billdu is a London-registered invoicing app with estimates, a receipt scanner and Xero sync, priced by how many clients you have. TapTax gives UK sole traders unlimited clients and files their Making Tax Digital updates.

Billdu is an invoicing and estimates app for small businesses, run by Billdu Ltd from North Finchley in London and carrying the "Billdu by Team Blue" name after the hosting group team.blue bought into it. It does a lot in a small package: invoices in 16 languages, estimates, a receipt scanner, a pay button through Stripe or PayPal, and a sync to Xero.
TapTax overlaps with Billdu on invoicing and receipts, and goes further on UK tax. The two price very differently, so this page starts with the number that decides your Billdu plan.

Where these prices come from
Billdu's pricing page, including its UK address, showed only dollars and euros on 7 October 2026, and says the prices are the same in both. The pound prices on this page are the UK App Store in-app prices for the iPhone app on the same day. The pricing page also gave two trial lengths at once, seven days with no card in the plan table and 30 days with 20% off in a pop-up, and a seven-day refund. Client limits decide the plan
Billdu does something unusual: every plan has unlimited invoices, and the limit is on clients instead. Lite allows 10, Standard 50 and Premium unlimited. For a sole trader with a steady list of a dozen customers, that means Standard at £12.99 a month on the App Store, and Premium at £23.99 if any of them are billed on a repeating schedule.
TapTax limits nothing once you are on Starter: unlimited clients, unlimited invoices, repeating invoices and reminders, for £4.99 a month or £49 a year. Its free plan is a trial, with three invoices in total.
Receipts, compared fairly
Both products read receipts, which is less common among invoice apps. Billdu's receipt scanner starts on Standard. TapTax reads receipts and supplier bills on every plan, 5 a month on Free, 50 on Starter and 500 on Pro. It pulls out the supplier, date, net, VAT and total with a confidence for each field, checks that the figures add up and the VAT rate is a UK one, flags likely duplicates, and matches each document to its payment on your bank statement. More on that on the receipts and bills page.
What Billdu does better
Billdu is more international. Invoices in 16 languages and any currency suit a sole trader selling into Europe, and it supports e-invoicing for Spain, Belgium and Slovakia. Estimates sit inside your account from Standard, and the pay button lets clients pay by card or PayPal. If your accountant uses Xero, Billdu's sync is a real convenience.
What TapTax does better
TapTax is cheaper for a typical UK client list and includes repeating invoices from the first paid plan. It handles UK late payment: for business clients it can add statutory interest at 8% above the Bank of England base rate and £40, £70 or £100 fixed compensation to its reminders, under the Late Payment of Commercial Debts Act. And it files your Making Tax Digital quarterly update from the same records, for sole trader income and, on Pro, property income.
- E-invoicing
- Sending an invoice as structured data between accounting systems, rather than as a PDF. The UK will require it for VAT-registered businesses from April 2029, using the Peppol network.
The UK e-invoicing mandate is still some way off and does not cover businesses that are not VAT-registered. Our e-invoicing hub explains who is in scope and when.
What a year costs
For a sole trader with 20 clients, some billed monthly, filing under Making Tax Digital:
- Billdu Premium plus Xero for MTD: £287.88 a year at the App Store monthly price, plus Xero Simple at £7 a month excluding VAT, checked 7 October 2026.
- TapTax Starter: £49 a year on the annual plan, including repeating invoices, reminders, receipt reading and every quarterly update.
Moving from Billdu to TapTax
Switching invoicing apps mid-year is less work than it sounds, because nothing about your past invoices has to move.
- Keep your old invoices where they are. They are your record of what you billed, and you must keep business records for at least 5 years after the 31 January deadline for the tax year. Export them as PDFs if you are closing your Billdu account.
- Add your regular clients once, with their payment terms. TapTax uses the terms to set each due date, and our invoice due date calculator shows how they work.
- Build a rate card of the jobs or services you sell at your usual prices, so a new invoice is a few taps.
- Note where your numbering changes. TapTax numbers your invoices itself, in one unbroken run (INV-001, INV-002 and so on). Keep a note of your last Billdu number with your records, so anyone checking can see where one run ends and the next begins. Our guide to invoice numbering explains why a clear sequence matters.
- Import your bank statement for the current tax year as a CSV. Your income is counted from the payments, so invoices you sent from Billdu that have already been paid are not counted twice.
- Set repeating invoices and reminders for clients you bill every month.
Who should choose which
A translator invoicing clients across Europe in euros
Billdu. Sixteen invoice languages, any currency and a card pay button fit cross-border work, and the Xero sync can handle the books.
A window cleaner with forty regular rounds
TapTax. Forty clients would need Billdu Standard, and monthly repeating rounds Billdu Premium. TapTax Starter covers both and files your quarterly update. See the window cleaner invoice template.
A sole trader who wants estimates in the same app
Billdu Standard, or keep TapTax and use the free quote generator for the occasional estimate.
The bottom line
“Billdu limits who you can bill. TapTax limits nothing once you pay, and turns what you bill into your tax return.”
Billdu is a capable, international invoicing app with estimates, a receipt scanner and Xero sync. For a UK sole trader with a regular client list who files under Making Tax Digital, TapTax does unlimited clients, repeats, reminders, receipts and quarterly filing for less than Billdu's cheapest App Store plan.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Billdu cost in the UK?
Billdu's website showed prices in dollars and euros only on 7 October 2026: Lite $7.99, Standard $14.99 and Premium $27.99 a month on monthly billing, or $4.99, $9.99 and $19.99 a month on annual billing. The UK App Store listed Lite at £6.99, Standard at £12.99 and Premium at £23.99 a month. Annual prices in pounds could not be verified.
What are Billdu's plan limits?
Clients, rather than invoices: 10 on Lite, 50 on Standard and unlimited on Premium, with unlimited invoices and expenses on every plan. Estimates, reminders and receipts start on Standard, and recurring invoices and the API are Premium only, per Billdu's pricing page and help centre on 7 October 2026.
Does Billdu do Making Tax Digital?
No. Billdu was not on HMRC's find-software service for MTD for Income Tax or for VAT when we checked on 7 October 2026. It syncs with Xero, which can file, but that is a second subscription.
Does Billdu support e-invoicing?
For Spain, Belgium and Slovakia, per its features page on 7 October 2026. UK e-invoicing becomes mandatory for VAT-registered businesses from April 2029; see our e-invoicing hub for what that means for sole traders.
Is TapTax on HMRC's software directory?
Not yet. TapTax is HMRC-recognised, with its directory listing pending, so it does not appear on GOV.UK's find-software service today. Billdu does not appear either, because it is not MTD software.
